James Ellis Phoenix was born on July 19, 1951 to the parents of Dorothy Frazier Phoenix and James P. Phoenix, Jr. At an ealry age, he was baptized at Tremont Temple Baptist Church where he served on the usher board. He remained an active member through his adult years until his employment did not permit him to be in regular attendance. Ellis was educated in the public schools of Chatham County and graduated from Sol C. Johnson High School in 1969. While in High School, he played the trumpet in the Atom Smasher's Band and was a member of the track team. From 1969- 70, he attended Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah, Georgia. In 1973, he received a degree in Mortuary Science from Miami Dade College, Miami, Florida. Upon returning to Savannah, he was employed by Williams and Williams Funeral Home, where he remained until he became ill. He was an avid football and basketball fan, a lover of old cowboy movies and deep sea fishing. To know him was to love him because he always had a compliment for ladies and something funny to say to men. He leaves to cherish his memories: parents, James and Dorothy Phoenix, Savannah, Georgia; brother, Floyd E. Phoenix (Sheila), Brunswick, Georgia; two sisters, Dorothy Lauretta Phoenix, Savannah, Georgia and Verlene Tilson (Nathaniel), Kennesaw, Georgia; two nieces, Na'Cole Wilson (Demetrius), Indianapoles, Indiana and Natalie Tilson, Kennesaw, Georgia; two uncles, Richard Frazier, Sr. and Rev. Dennis Frazier (Gwen); cousin, Shirley Frazier-Edwards, all of Savannah, Georgia; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral service for Mr. James E. Phoenix will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Tremont Temple Baptist Church, 1110 M. L. King, Jr. Blvd; Rev. Quentin Morris officiating. Interment Oak Grove Cemetery. Reposing at the church Tuesday 9am until hour of service.
